I tested it for two weeks. The AI caught every major competitive change I would have found manually, plus several I would have missed. Where Human Judgment Still Matters

Understanding those strategic patterns requires business context and competitive instinct AI doesn't have. I need to interpret the signals and advise product and executive teams on what competitor moves mean for our strategy.

Predicting competitor roadmaps and future moves. AI can analyze what competitors have done historically. It can't reliably predict what they'll do next. That requires understanding their strategy, market position, funding situation, leadership changes, and competitive pressures in ways that go beyond pattern matching in historical data.

I still do quarterly competitor strategy assessments where I try to predict their next moves based on available signals. AI helps gather the signals, but the prediction requires human judgment.

Validating AI-generated competitive analysis for accuracy. AI occasionally gets things wrong—misinterprets technical capabilities, overstates differences that don't matter, or misses critical distinctions. I need to validate outputs before using them in sales enablement or strategic decisions.

This quality control step is critical. I can't blindly trust AI competitive intelligence—I need to spot-check findings and validate conclusions before acting on them.

Crafting competitive positioning that resonates emotionally, not just factually. AI can identify factual differentiators—we're faster, we have more integrations, we're cheaper. It struggles with positioning that resonates emotionally—why those differences matter to buyers, how to frame advantages in compelling narratives, which angles create urgency.

That strategic positioning work still requires human understanding of buyer psychology and positioning craft.

The Shift from Research to Analysis

The automation of competitive intelligence research fundamentally changes what the PMM role looks like.

Before AI: I spent 70% of my time gathering competitive intelligence through manual research and 30% analyzing what it meant and taking action based on insights.

With AI: I spend 20% of my time setting up monitoring systems and validating AI outputs, and 80% analyzing competitive dynamics, predicting competitor moves, and advising strategy based on intelligence.

The work shifted from research execution to strategic analysis. AI handles the data gathering that used to consume most of my time. I focus on the interpretation and strategic recommendations that AI can't do well.

This is more intellectually engaging work. Manual competitor website checking was tedious but necessary. Strategic analysis of competitive dynamics based on comprehensive data is genuinely interesting. The AI freed me from grunt work to focus on work that requires expertise and judgment.

But it also required developing new skills. I needed to learn how to effectively prompt AI for competitive analysis, how to validate AI outputs for accuracy, how to set up monitoring systems and automation workflows, and how to do strategic interpretation at higher volume since AI enables processing much more competitive data.

The Platforms That Actually Work

The effective platforms share common characteristics: continuous automated monitoring of competitor digital properties, AI-powered analysis that identifies meaningful changes versus noise, integration with battlecard and sales enablement systems so insights flow automatically to where they're used, and customization that learns your specific competitive landscape and what matters in your market.

What This Means for Competitive Intelligence Work

If you're still doing competitive intelligence primarily through manual research, you're spending time on activities that are rapidly being automated. The PMMs who adapt will shift their time to strategic analysis and competitive positioning. The PMMs who don't will find themselves doing increasingly low-value manual research that AI can do better and faster.

The skills that matter are changing. Deep research skills matter less when AI can research more comprehensively than humans. Strategic interpretation, competitive psychology, positioning craft, and business context matter more because those are where humans still have meaningful advantages.

I'm deliberately practicing strategic competitive analysis instead of research execution. Spending time predicting competitor strategies instead of tracking their feature releases. Focusing on positioning frameworks that create competitive differentiation instead of comprehensive feature comparison matrices.

The future of competitive intelligence work isn't better research—it's better strategy based on automated research that's more comprehensive than any human could manually compile. The question is whether you're developing the strategic analysis skills that matter when research becomes automated, or doubling down on manual research skills that are becoming obsolete.
