I'm not arguing qualitative insights don't matter—they're critical for understanding why patterns exist. But they're insufficient for determining which patterns actually predict wins, retention, and revenue. You need quantitative analysis for that.
The PMMs who develop strong analytical capabilities will make positioning decisions based on what actually drives outcomes. The PMMs who rely purely on qualitative insights will make decisions based on what customers say matters, which often diverges from what actually drives their behavior.
The 2030 version of product marketing is more analytical than the 2020 version. Data fluency isn't optional—it's the difference between positioning that sounds good based on customer interviews and positioning that wins deals based on quantitative pattern analysis.
The question is whether you're developing the analytical skills to compete in a data-driven PMM world or hoping qualitative insights stay sufficient despite mounting evidence that quantitative analysis drives better outcomes.
