The body outlined the familiar case:

  • Fifty-five percent of households expected to have smart speakers by 2025
  • Voice search queries growing 35% year over year
  • Natural language queries now dominate search behavior

The recommendation: completely rebuild our content strategy around voice search optimization. Write conversational content. Target question-based keywords. Optimize for featured snippets (since voice assistants read them aloud). Build FAQ pages for every product feature.

I'd seen this movie before.

In 2018, every marketing blog declared voice search the future. We rebuilt our content strategy. Minimal impact on traffic or conversions.

What this means: People use voice to reorder consumables they've purchased before ("Alexa, order more paper towels").

What it doesn't mean: People use voice for complex purchase decisions requiring comparison and evaluation.

Even in consumer e-commerce, voice shopping is dominated by repeat purchases of simple products. Not discovery and evaluation of new products.

Stat: "Natural language queries are growing" (Google)

What this means: People are typing more conversational, question-based queries into search engines.

What it doesn't mean: They're speaking those queries out loud instead of typing them.

This stat is actually important (more on this later), but it's not about voice search. It's about how people formulate typed queries.

The conflation of "natural language queries" with "voice search" is where most B2B marketers go wrong.

The Three Times We Optimized for Voice (and What Actually Happened)

In 2027, some marketing consultant will email us about voice search being critical for 2028 strategy. The recommendation will be the same (optimize for conversational content, target question keywords, build FAQ pages).

And it still won't be the right strategy for B2B.

Because the fundamental mismatch will remain: voice search is optimized for simple, quick-answer queries asked while multitasking. B2B purchase research requires complex, comparative analysis conducted while fully focused.

These use cases don't overlap. More voice assistant adoption won't change that.

What will keep changing: how people use AI agents for research, and how those agents surface and cite content.

Different technology. Different user behavior. Different optimization strategy.

But the voice search predictions will keep coming. Because the technology keeps improving and the statistics keep growing.

The One Thing Voice Search Did Change

There is one way voice search predictions were right, even if the reasoning was wrong:

Natural language queries are now the default. People type "how do I choose between competitive intelligence platforms" instead of "competitive intelligence platforms comparison."

This shift is real. But it's not driven by voice search. It's driven by AI training people that natural language works better.

The implication: Write content that answers natural language questions comprehensively.

Not because people will speak those questions to Alexa.

Because people will type those questions into ChatGPT, and you want to be the source ChatGPT cites.
